Volvo Car Corp. says it expects to build 4,000-6,000 plug-in diesel hybrid versions of its V60 wagon for the 2014 model year.
The company introduced the model in Europe in September and sold out the initial batch of 1,000 cars before any reached dealer showrooms. Volvo has no plan to offer the car in the U.S.
The plug-in combines a 2.4-liter, five-cylinder diesel, 70-hp electric motor and 11.2-kW lithium-ion battery. Volvo says the system emits only 48 g/km of carbon dioxide and averages almost 131 mpg in the European driving cycle when operating in its normal hybrid mode.
The powertrain can deliver 285 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, propel the car from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds or travel about 30 miles in electric-only mode, according to the company.
Volvo makes the hybrid V60 in Gothenburg, Sweden, on the same line that assembles conventionally powered vehicles. The company says the plug-in version requires more than 300 special parts.
