U.S., VW Want Diesel-Related Civil Lawsuits Consolidated in Detroit

The U.S. Dept. of Justice and Volkswagen AG have asked that some 350 civil lawsuits accusing VW of defrauding owners of its diesel-powered car be consolidated in a federal court in Detroit.
Reuters reports that VW has separately suggested that multiple lawsuits filed by investors who say the company's diesel emissions cheating scandal cost them billions of dollars should be grouped separately and heard by a federal judge in Virginia.
How the complaints will be consolidated and where they will be heard is to be decided on Dec. 3 by the U.S. Multi-District Litigation panel, according to the news service. The panel routinely combines similar civil cases so they can be processed and resolved more quickly.
Reuters says the Justice Dept. favors Detroit for the civil cases in part because VW engineering offices and Environmental Protection Agency labs are nearby.
