The U.K.’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is teaming with seven universities to form the Faraday Battery Institute.

The group aims to speed the development and commercialization of next-generation batteries for electrified vehicles. Participating universities are Cambridge, the College of London, Imperial College London, Newcastle, Oxford, Warwick and the University of Southampton.

EPSRC will contribute £65 million ($86 million) to the program, with the universities pledging to contribute nearly £14 million ($19 million) more. The institute also is launching the Faraday Research Challenge, which will be divided into three programs: innovation, research and “scale-up.”

EPSRC’s previously has committed to investing £246 million ($290 million) in EV battery research. This includes funding for battery research by U.K.-based Dyson Ltd., the bagless vacuum cleaner company, which last week announced it is developing an EV.
