ULEMCo Ltd. has developed a fuel cell-powered system to extend the driving range of Nissan Motor Co.’s e-NV200 electric commercial van.
The U.K.-based company claims its 12-kW fuel cell can extend the range of a fully loaded van to 150 miles (on the European driving cycle). This would nearly double the range of the base electric model and easily meet the daily requirements for most commercial vans, ULEMCo notes.
The fuel cell unit and its hydrogen fuel tank mount on the roof to avoid diminishing the e3-NV200’s payload capacity.
ULEMCo developed the system to meet Britain’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles Hydrogen for Transport Program. The program, which was announced last week, will provide £23 million ($29 million) of funding through 2020 to create a hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
ULEMCo was spun off from Revolve Technologies in 2014 to commercialize hydrogen combustion engine technology. The company previously has retrofitted a diesel-powered Ford Transit van to run on hydrogen.
