Ube Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. are forming a joint venture in China to produce electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries used in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Under the 50:50 venture, the two Japanese companies will combine their existing electrolyte operations in China next April. They also are considering partnerships in other countries to help reduce costs and enhance their product development capabilities.

Mitsubishi Chemical currently operates electrolyte plants in China, Japan, the U.K. and U.S. with a combined annual capacity of about 48,000 tons. Ubi's two plants in Japan and China can produce about one-third of that volume.
