The University of Michigan's Mobility Transformation Center expects to open its $6.5 million connected-car test facility in Ann Arbor on July 20, according to Director Peter Sweatman.
The 32-acre facility, dubbed M City, is located on the university's North Campus. It will contain three lane-miles of concrete and asphalt roadway that include 13 intersections and an assortment of roundabouts, bike lanes, sidewalks and crosswalks, traffic signals and signage, construction obstacles and building facades.
The MTC and its test facility are backed by the Michigan Dept. of Transportation and Michigan Economic Development Corp. Funding also comes from 13 founding corporate members, each of whom has pledged $1 million over three years.
The MTC separately is expanding a previous federally funded 3,000-vehicle test of connected cars on the streets of Ann Arbor to a fleet of 9,000 cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. It also is helping Michigan's DOT install infrastructure to support 20,000 connected cars operating on public roads in southeast Michigan.
