Toyota Motor Corp. plans to launch at least eight new "modern mobility" vehicles over the next five years In conjunction with its sponsorship of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan's Best Car magazine reports.
The rollout will include several new fuel cell-powered models starting with a hydrogen-fueled version of the Lexus LS sedan in 2018 and a new taxi, Best Car says. The LS will be followed by a fuel cell variant of the Japan-market Toyota Crown sedan in 2019 and possibly the next-generation Estima minivan sometime later, according to the report.
The new fuel cell vehicles will be based on the technology used on the recently launched Toyota Mirai, the carmaker's first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle. Toyota declined to comment on the report. But it previously has acknowledged it plans to expand its fuel cell offerings.
Previous reports suggest Lexus will unveil the redesigned LS later this year at the Tokyo auto show as part of the luxury division's 25th birthday celebration. The fuel cell version could be based on the long-wheelbase variant of that model.
