Toyota Motor Corp. plans to convert recycled batteries from hybrid vehicles into energy management systems for its dealers in Japan.
The program, which is scheduled to begin in April, will use nickel-metal hydride batteries to create backup storage units that hold 10 kWh of energy. Dealers can use the system during power outages and to shift peak power demand to times when power from the grid costs less.
Toyota says the 2,200-lb unit combined with such energy-saving measures as solar carports, LED lighting and more efficient air conditioning can reduce a dealership's energy use and cost by 50%.
The company will sell the battery backup systems through its energy business subsidiary, Toyota Turbine and Systems Inc.
