Toyota Motor Corp. says it will supply its fuel cell powertrain technology for commercial buses built in China by Beijing Automotive Group Co. (BAIC).

Toyota says it will supply fuel cell components and high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks to BAIC’s Beiqi Foton Motor subsidiary. The partners aim to promote the technology in shuttle buses used in Beijing during the Winter Olympics in 2022.

Toyota introduced the first mass-produced fuel cell car, the Mirai, in 2014. But the company has sold only about 8,300 such vehicles to date. The company unveiled its first fuel cell bus, the Sora, a year ago. It said at the time it hopes to deliver more than 100 of the buses for the Olympics.

The lack of hydrogen fueling stations has been a major impediment in sales to the general public. That’s one reason for Toyota’s interest in commercial vehicles and their fleet-based operation. Earlier today the company announced a partnership with Tsinghua University to open a research lab in Beijing to focus on fuel cell technologies.
