Toyota Motor Corp. and Suzuki Motor Corp. say they have concluded initial talks about potential partnerships and now are beginning “concrete examinations” in the areas of environmental, safety, information technologies and parts sharing.
The Japanese carmakers say they have established an “implementation framework” to move the process forward and identify specific projects, but they haven't provided a timeframe. A Nikkei report last week indicated a deal was imminent following the companies announcement last October that they were exploring various collaborations.
Analysts note that Suzuki could benefit from Toyota's expertise in advanced technologies, including electrified powertrains and autonomous vehicle systems. Suzuki has yet to offer a hybrid or electric vehicle.
Toyota, meanwhile, could learn from Suzuki when it comes to low-cost design and speed to market. Suzuki also could help Toyota grow its presence in India, where the smaller company has a leading position through its Maruti Suzuki venture.
