Toyota Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. have agreed to jointly develop a chassis for midsize and large electric vehicles and a midsize electric SUV that each will market under its own brand.

The partnership will combine Subaru’s expertise with all-wheel drive and Toyota’s electrification know-how. Subaru says it will shift its existing all-electric development resources to the new joint program.
The companies say collaborating on the platform (pictured) will cut engineering, development and purchasing costs and help them meet an “urgent need” to bring electrified vehicles to market.
Toyota and Subaru began a business collaboration in 2005. They jointly produce a conventionally powered sports car, launched in 2012 as the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ. The hybrid version of Subaru’s Crosstrek SUV uses Toyota’s hybrid technology.
