Toyota Motor Corp. is mulling plans to offer its Lexus LS large luxury sedan with an optional fuel cell powertrain in about 2020, according to The Nikkei.
The company introduced its purpose-built Mirai fuel cell car last year. So far it has sold 350 of the exotically styled sedans, which are priced in Japan at about 7.2 million yen ($59,700). A conventionally powered Lexus LS retails there for about 8.5 million yen ($70,500).
Toyota aims to sell about 2,000 Mirais next year and 3,000 more in 2017. The company also has announced a target of increasing its annual sales of fuel cell cars to 30,000 units by 2020.
The Nikkei notes that Toyota designed the Mirai’s fuel-cell system with components that could be shared with other company models. The system likely be used in the LS will feature a next-generation fuel cell stack and simpler manufacturing techniques, the newspaper says.
