Toyota Plans Third Factory in Malaysia

Toyota Motor Corp. intends to open a 30 billion-yen ($275 million) assembly plant in Malaysia in about 2018 with capacity to make 50,000 vehicles per year, The Nikkei says.
The facility will make unidentified small cars and, pending demand, could eventually double its annual output, according to the report. The factory will be operated by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd., Toyota’s joint venture with Japanese trading company Toyota Tsusho and Malaysian conglomerate UMW Holdings.
Toyota currently supplies the Malaysian market from two local factories that assemble roughly 80,000 cars, minivans, SUVs and commercial vans per year. The third facility will enable the company to improve efficiency by dedicating each plant to making related models, The Nikkei says.
