Toyota Motor Corp. is working with Carmera Inc., a New York City-based startup, to develop high-definition maps for urban roads.

As part of a proof-of-concept program, the companies will use existing cameras in Toyota test vehicles to collect data over several months from downtown Tokyo. Commercially available dashcam drive recorders will be used in vehicles that don’t have cameras, which are used for various driver-assist systems.

Images and other information will be processed on Carmera’s real-time platform to automatically generate HD map data. Toyota plans to use the maps as part of an image library for future automated vehicles.

HD mapping, which hAS the capability to pinpoint a vehicle’s location within a lane, is considered a key enabler for autonomous driving technologies. Most of the focus to date has been on creating such maps for highways, which Toyota notes accounts for less than 1% of the worldwide road network. The carmaker says the next challenge is to build and maintain maps for urban areas and local roads.

Through its Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development unit, the carmaker aims to create an open software platform for HD maps.

Carmera says it already has gathered videos of millions of miles of driving. The company won the “Best of Show” award for mobility innovation at the 2018 AutoMobili-D tech expo in Detroit.
