Toyota Motor Corp. and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone have agreed to collaborate on vehicle connectivity services based on next-generation 5G wireless technology.

The companies will develop artificial intelligence applications and “big-data” analytics. Both capabilities are considered critical to enabling connectivity that can reduce crashes and bring new consumer services, such as high-definition video, into the vehicle. But delivering these capabilities will demand greater data transfer speed and capacity.

5G standards aren’t likely to be finalized until about 2020. But such systems are expected to deliver as much as 10 times the capacity of today’s 4G wireless networks. High-speed connectivity also will accelerate the viability of self-driving vehicles.

Toyota is already working with Japanese cellular service provider KDDI on 4G-based connectivity. The two companies will expand into 5G-based products too, according to The Nikkei.
