Toyota Motor Corp. says its Corolla hybrid compact sedan has received a 52-mpg fuel efficiency rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The rating (53 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway) matches that of Toyota’s base Prius, with which it shares its hybrid system. Hyundai’s Ioniq hybrid sedan is the market leader at 58 mpg.
The 2020 model marks the first time Toyota has offered a hybrid Corolla in the U.S. Such models have been sold elsewhere for several years.
In the U.S., the most efficient non-hybrid Corolla gets 34 mpg. That vehicle is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
