Tesla Motors Inc. has been testing new features for its controversial Autopilot driver-assist technology for several months as part of its next over-the-air software update.
The so-called version 8.0 upgrade is under “final review,” CEO Elon Musk tells reporters. He says the changes will be “very noticeable,” providing “material improvements” in autonomous driving capabilities and the “most important” user-interface improvements since the Model S electric sedan was introduced.
One of the new functions will allow vehicles to navigate highway interchanges and autonomously travel from one highway to another, reports elecktrek.com. Drivers will have to initiate such maneuvers by using the appropriate turn signal when approaching an exit, according to the technology website.
Additional changes also are said to be in the works to help ensure drivers remain attentive and able to quickly take over driving responsibilities as needed, according to other reports. These include enhancements to another recent update that disables the Autopilot system if a driver takes his or her hands off the steering wheel and doesn’t respond to prompts to put them back on. The new feature would prevent drivers from immediately re-engaging Autopilot after it has been turned off in such situations, so drivers can’t use the feature again until restarting or parking the vehicle.
The v8.0 software upgrade also is expected to include improvements to the automated steering and cruise control systems to enable smoother operation during heavy traffic situations.
Tesla launched Autopilot, which allows for autonomous steering, braking and throttle control, on select highways, late last year. The system has come under fire this year in the wake of a fatal crash and other recent accidents involving vehicles equipped with the technology.
