Tesla Inc. says its sole assembly plant—located in Fremont, Calif.—will be at full capacity when it adds the $35,000 Model 3 electric sedan this summer.
CEO Elon Musk tells shareholders the company is looking for a location in North America to open a second factory to build the Model Y, a small electric crossover vehicle due less than three years from now. That model will debut a third platform for the company and could become its best-selling vehicle, Musk says.
The Fremont facility currently makes Tesla’s Model S sedans and Model X crossover vehicles, which share the same chassis. The plant will begin ramping up output of the Model 3 in July.
Tesla also intends to reveal a prototype electric heavy-duty truck this autumn. The company hasn’t indicated when that vehicle might go into production.
