Tesla Motors Inc. has unveiled its new Tesla Energy line of batteries to be used by homes and businesses to store solar power and reduce reliance on the electrical grid.

CEO Elon Musk says the company will begin deliveries of its Powerwall home battery this summer. The 220-lb lithium-ion battery comes in 7 kWh ($3,000) and 10 kWh ($3,500) capacities and is housed in a box that is 7 inches thick and roughly three feet wide and four feet tall.

The Powerwall can be attached to the side of a house or on a garage wall. The battery uses cells similar to those employed by Tesla's Model S electric sedan. The unit is designed to store power generated during the day by the home's solar array, then feed it to the home in the morning and evening when power demands are highest.

The automated device also can be used to store electricity from the grid when rates are low and power the home when rates are high. Multiple batteries can be ganged together to increase capacity.

Tesla says the Powerwall battery, which the company will guarantee for 10 years, can deliver 2 kW of power continuously with peaks of 3.3 kW.
