Suzuki Motor Corp., which is opening an assembly plant in Gujarat, India, in 2017, says it will double the facility’s annual capacity to 500,000 units in 2019.
Suzuki also plans to add engine and transmission production at the complex as part of the 100 billion-yen ($970 million) expansion. Two years ago the company said the facility may eventually be expanded to 750,000 vehicles per year.
The company’s Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. venture—India's largest carmaker—already has capacity in India to make 1.5 million vehicles per year at two factories in Gurgaon and Manesar. The Gujarat facility will make vehicles exclusively for Maruti Suzuki. But it will be operated independently by Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt. Ltd., a new wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese company.
Suzuki announced last year it will roll out 15 new models, including entries in the larger B and C segments, in India by 2020.
