Global sales of lidar (light detection and ranging) sensors for autonomous vehicle technologies will grow to $13 billion by 2027, predicts a report by ABI Research.

The London-based research firm expects lidar to be launched in production vehicles in 2019. Currently, lidar is relegated to prototype and test vehicles equipped with autonomous driving technologies.

About a dozen companies are developing next-generation solid-state lidar systems, ABI notes. Costs are expected to be dramatically reduced to as low as $100 per unit for these sensors from $50,000 or more for current prototype systems.

Self-driving cars likely will use a combination of lidar, radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors to map their surroundings and identify a wide range of objects. Current lidar suppliers include Ibeo, LeddarTech, Pioneer, Sensata and Velodyne as well as startups such as Aerostar Strobe, Innoviz Technologies, Phantom Intelligence and Quanergy.
