Annual global sales of vehicles equipped with some sort of semi-autonomous driving features are expected to grow nearly 20% per year to total 7.8 million vehicles by 2021, according to a new report by MarketsandMarkets.
The Pune, India-based research and consulting firm estimates there were about 3.2 million such vehicles sold worldwide last year. The 150-page report says growth will be driven by on-going technology advances and safety benefits.
The ramp-up of fully autonomous vehicles will take more time. MarketsandMarkets projects there will be just 180,000 self-driving cars sold in 2025, with annual volumes rising to just over 1 million vehicles by 2030.
Adaptive front lights and radar are expected to be the most popular technologies used in semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles, respectively, in coming years. High take rates also are forecast for parking-assist systems.
Europe and North America will be the largest markets for semi- and full-autonomous vehicles, respectively, according to the authors. Demand is likely to be high in China and Japan too, according to the report.
