Samsung Electronics Co. is launching a new software interface that enables connectivity with third-party service providers, creates an in-vehicle wi-fi hotspot, delivers diagnostic support and can help drivers improve their fuel efficiency.
The aftermarket device, which targets car and commercial vehicle fleets, will launch in the second quarter.
Samsung Connect Auto plugs into a vehicle’s OBD II on-board diagnostics port. Information generated by the system is sent to a user’s smartphone, where it can be accessed via a downloadable application. AT&T will be the first wireless provider to offer the service in the U.S., Samsung says.
Other partners include Amdocs, AXA, Blink by Agero, China Unicom, Cisco, Crawford & Company, Ericsson, Europcar, Here, IBM, Jasper, Oberthur Technologies, Openbay, Orange, Tantalum and Willis Towers Watson.
A "virtual mechanic" feature checks the status of various vehicle systems and alerts drivers of any maintenance needs, including information about local repair shops. The fuel economy monitor uses proprietary algorithms that analyze miles traveled, vehicle speed, time on the road and other data to help motorists drive more efficiently.
Connect Auto's LTE wi-fi hotspot allows multiple users to access the Internet to stream content and play online games.
Another feature encourages safe driving behavior by using driver rating algorithms and data about a car’s location, Samsung says. If an accident occurs, emergency alerts automatically notify the driver’s contacts and emergency service providers. A “Find My Car” app can help motorists locate their vehicles in a large parking lot.
Drivers also can share information with insurance companies about their vehicles and driving behavior to qualify for potential discounts. Automated trip logs are generated to keep business travelers up to date on their expense reports.
Samsung says personal data will be protected by Samsung KNOX, the company’s defense-grade mobile security platform.

Honda Re-Imagines and Re-Engineers the Ridgeline
When Honda announced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005, it opened the press release describing the vehicle: “The Honda Ridgeline re-defines what a truck can be with its true half-ton bed payload capability, an interior similar to a full-size truck and the exterior length of a compact truck.” And all that said, people simply couldn’t get over the way there is a diagonal piece, a sail-shaped buttress, between the cab and the box.
