Toyota Motor Corp. has finally agreed to add Google Inc.’s Android Auto smartphone connectivity system to its vehicles in the U.S., sources tell Bloomberg News.

A formal announcement could be made next month, according to the report. Toyota and Google declined to comment.

Hyundai Motor Co. was the first carmaker to offer the technology, which allows a smartphone’s apps to be operated through a vehicle’s infotainment controls and displays, in 2015. Since then, most major carmakers have added Android Auto and/or Apple Inc.’s CarPlay system for iPhones.

Toyota is one of the last major carmakers not to directly offer Android Auto. The company began offering CarPlay on select models earlier this year.

Previously both platforms could only connect with Toyota vehicles using SmartDeviceLink. The open-source platform was developed by Ford Motor Co. as a means for carmakers to maintain control of their in-vehicle infotainment systems and telematics applications.
