Isuzu Motors Ltd. reportedly is in final negotiations with Nvidia Corp. to use the California-based chipmaker’s self-driving-car technology for commercial vehicles, The Nikkei reports.
The collaboration could start as soon as December, according to the newspaper. Under the proposed deal, the partners would adapt Nvidia’s artificial intelligence programs and data for passenger vehicles to Isuzu trucks and other commercial vehicles, according to the newspaper.
Through real-world test fleets and simulations, Nvidia already has collected a large amount of driving data for passenger vehicles. But The Nikkei notes that such information isn’t directly transferable to trucks because the use of sensors can vary based on a vehicle’s size and shape.
Such differences can affect camera views and the relative position of obstacles. Other challenges for autonomous trucks include larger blind spots and a greater potential for electromagnetic interference, according to The Nikkei.
