Lithium Energy Japan (LEJ) plans to launch a new lithium-ion battery in 2020 that can provide twice the driving range of current battery packs used in small electric vehicles, The Nikkei reports.

The extended range stems from a unique electrode chemistry that will enable battery cells to retain more ions, according to the report. Lithium-ion batteries charge and release electricity as lithium ions travel between the electrodes.

LEJ, a joint venture of battery maker GS Yuasa., Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi Motors, will produce the batteries at its plant in Shiga Prefecture. The company plans to supply the cells to MMC and other carmakers in Japan and Europe.

Previous reports in 2014 indicated GS Yuasa was developing a lithium-sulfur battery with three times the capacity of existing products. The company also was targeting a 2020 commercialization time for that technology, according to the reports.
