Last month the Renault-Nissan alliance pushed back its goal of selling 1.5 million electric vehicles by four years to 2020 because consumers were balking at the high cost, short range and lack of EV charging infrastructure.

Now the partnership tells The Wall Street Journal it should be able to hit the target sooner.

Billy Hayes, vice president of Nissan's global EV operation, says enthusiasm for electrics is "getting contagious" in part because more governments are showing interest in promoting electrics.

Nissan has sold more than 100,000 of its Leaf electric sedans since the car was introduced in 2010. The company will begin selling the car in South Korea in the second half of this year and has said it may being building Leafs in China.
