Renault SA could sign a deal within weeks to build an assembly plant in Algeria, according to Reuters, which cites an unidentified industry source.
The facility would be part of Renault's effort to expand sales in emerging markets. Talks had been slowed by government demands about the factory's location, size of Renault's investment and level of involvement of local suppliers, according to the French newspaper La Tribune.
In February Renault opened a €1 billion assembly plant in neighboring Morocco near Tangier with capacity to make 170,000 Dacia Lodgy MPVs. The company also makes the Kangoo van and Dacia Logan and Sandero cars at a facility in Casablanca, Morocco. But Renault is barred by trade rules from selling its Moroccan output in Algeria.
