The organizers of the new Roborace circuit for autonomous vehicles demonstrated a prototype vehicle this week at Donington Park race track in Leicestershire, England.
Dubbed DevBot, the test vehicle features the same electric drivetrain, sensors, processors and communication technology planned for the “Robocar” that will compete in the upcoming racing series. But the DevBot is far less stylish and has a cockpit to allow a person to ride along and monitor the vehicle’s performance in real time.
All Roborace teams will have access to DevBot over the next several months to develop software for their own vehicles. Team racing algorithms will have to be approved by Roborace, which is part of the Formula E series for electric vehicles.
The one-hour autonomous vehicle races will be held on the same courses as the Formula E events. The 2016/2017 EV season kicks off next month in Hong Kong, but Roborace won’t be added until sometime next year.
