Troy, Mich.-based Protean Holdings Corp. says it will supply its in-wheel motors to Local Motors Inc. for use in the startup company’s self-driving electric vehicles.

The motors will debut in the 12-person “Olli” autonomous van that Local Motors has been demonstrating for several years. The partners also plan to work together on unspecified future applications.

The Ollie features a variety of 3D-printed parts and uses more than 30 sensors to monitor the surrounding environment. To date, prototypes have been powered by a 30-kW electric motor and have a top speed of 30 mph.

Protean claims to be the world’s largest supplier of in-wheel electric motors.
