Prosecutors in Munich say their criminal investigation into diesel emission law cheating at Audi AG has reached the carmaker’s management board level.

The office tells Reuters its probe is examining current and former Audi board members to determine whether any executives violated the law by condoning the cheating. The news service notes that a breach of supervisory duties could result in a fine of as much as €1 million ($1.2 million).

Audi helped develop some of the diesel engines that parent company Volkswagen AG admits were rigged with illegal software to manipulate emission tests.
