Porsche Looks Toward Electrified Future, But Eschews Self-Driving Cars

Porsche AG is moving forward with plans to launch a plug-in hybrid car in 2018 and add an all-new electric vehicle by the end of the decade. But it has no intention to produce a fully autonomous vehicle.
Porsche owners want to drive themselves and remain in control of various vehicle functions, CEO Oliver Blume tells Westfalen-Blatt. Smartphones, meanwhile, “belong in your pocket,” he says, noting there is no need for Porsche to team up with a consumer technology company.
Blume reiterates Porsche’s plans to eventually offer hybrid versions of all its vehicles. The effort will kick off in two years with a plug-in hybrid version of the company’s iconic 911 sports car. That vehicle is expected to have an electric driving range of 31 miles.
The new EV will be based on the Mission E concept model Porsche debuted last autumn at the Frankfurt auto show. The car is expected to generate 600 hp and have a driving range of more than 300 miles.
