Police Car Maker Carbon Motors Fades Away

Carbon Motors Corp., which had hoped to begin making purpose-built police cars for the American market this year, has closed shop and abandoned its assembly plant in Connersville, Ind.
The city's mayor tells the Connersville News-Examiner that the company removed its machinery from the factory, a former Visteon Corp. facility it had leased from the city.
Carbon Motors predicted its Carbon E7 squad car would achieve more than 35 mpg. It applied for a $310 million loan from the U.S. Dept. of Energy, claimed it had lined up 13,000 orders and contracted BMW AG to supply as many as 240,000 automatic transmissions and inline 6-cylinder diesel engines for the cars. The company expected to hire about 1,000 people.
But the DOE loan was not approved, and the company's grandiose plans quickly stalled. Its lease on the Connersville plant expired last week, according to the newspaper.
