Poor air quality has prompted Oslo, Norway, to ban the operation of diesel cars in its central district, effective Jan. 17.
The city council says diesels won’t be allowed in the city center’s surface streets on any day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. until air pollution clears, the Financial Times reports. The ban does not apply to national expressways that run through the city. It also exempts vehicles equipped with the most advanced emission controls, diplomatic cars and all emergency vehicles.
This will be the first time the capital has exercised its year-old power to impose restrictions. The city council expects to lift the ban by the end of this week.
