Nissan Motor Co. confirms it will make fourth-generation lithium-ion batteries for Leaf electric sedans and e-NV200 electric vans at the company's electric vehicle and battery factory in Sunderland, U.K.
The announcement ends speculation that Nissan might choose an outside vendor for the batteries.
Sunderland currently makes 24-kW batteries for the two EVs and imports more advanced 30-kW versions for them from Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tenn. The units Sunderland is preparing to build will have an undisclosed greater energy rating and enable the Leaf to travel farther than the 250 km (155 miles) range possible with the 30-kW batteries.
Nissan says it will invest £27 million ($38 million) to prepare Sunderland for the new program. The facility also will supply the fourth-generation batteries to Nissan’s EV factory in Barcelona, Spain.
