Nissan Queues Up Self-Driving Chair for Waiting Lines

Nissan Motor Co. is demonstrating another self-driving chair concept to help promote its autonomous vehicle technology.
The latest concept, dubbed the ProPilot Chair, allows users to sit down and automatically move forward while waiting in lines. The automated rolling chairs, which can detect and follow chairs in front of them, use sensor technology similar to Nissan’s ProPilot autonomous vehicle technology, according to the carmaker.
Visitors to Nissan’s headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, can test drive ProPilot chairs this weekend. Demonstrations at select Japanese restaurants will be conducted next year.
Earlier this year Nissan demonstrated self-parking office chairs, which could spin 360˚ on four rollers. Cameras and other sensors connected to an on-board controller via wi-fi allowed the chairs to move around a room, avoid other objects and “park” back into pre-set positions.
Nissan introduced its ProPilot vehicle technology last month on the Serena minivan in Japan. The system can control steering, braking and throttle functions during single-lane highway driving.
