China’s NextEV Inc. has unveiled a concept self-driving electric vehicle under its NIO brand that it hopes to convert into a production model by as early as 2020.
The company is partnering with Mobileye NV and Nvidia Corp. on the autonomous driving technology. The Nio Eve concept features an artificial intelligence system that learns the preferences of its occupants and adapts the vehicle’s driving dynamics and interior settings accordingly—including an “augmented vision” system projected onto interior glass surfaces.
Accessed via two large minivan-like sliding doors, the concept’s interior sports a lounge-like seating configuration and folding work/entertainment table. One of the seats fully reclines. The car has no foot pedals or steering wheel.
NextEnergy says it set a speed record earlier this year of 160 mph for a fully autonomously operated vehicle with a specially equipped version of its NIO EP9 EV. The Shanghai-based company claims the vehicle, which it unveiled last November, has a top speed of nearly 200 mph.
