New Ram Truck Ups the Torque Ante
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is increasing the output of its Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup truck with a Cummins diesel engine to an industry best 900 lb-ft of torque.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is increasing the output of its Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup truck with a Cummins diesel engine to an industry best 900 lb-ft of torque. FCA says the increase marks a record high for a production vehicle.
The optional 6.7-liter inline-six engine has been tuned for the 2016 model year to generate an additional 35 lb-ft of twist, up 4% from its already industry-leading 865 lb-ft. The company didn't say if the engine's 385-hp rating would also be increased. The engine is mated with a high-performance Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission.
By comparison, Ford's upgraded PowerStroke V-8 diesel V-8 is rated at 860 lb-ft of torque, and General Motors' Duramax V-8 generates 765 lb-ft of torque. Nissan plans to offer a 5.0-liter Cummins V-8 diesel that makes 555 lb-ft of torque in its Titan pickup truck this fall.
Heavy-duty Ram trucks with a regular 6-speed automatic remain unchanged at 800 lb-ft of torque.
The 2016 Ram 3500 also boasts an industry-best towing capacity of 31,210 lbs. This is 1,210 lbs more than the current Ram and two tons more than its closest competitor, according to FCA.
To handle increased loads, rear axle ring gear hardware has been bolstered from 12 to 16 bolts on all trucks equipped with a 11.8-inch axle. Ram says the additional hardened bolts and stronger material are used in the differential case to enhance long-term durability.
