Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG's MTU Friedrichshafen unit has formed a partnership with Akasol GmbH to develop lithium-ion battery systems.
MTU plans to use the devices as it expands into hybrid and all-electric propulsion systems. The electrified systems could be used in a wide variety of transportation applications, including passenger and commercial vehicles, marine and rail systems, according to the partners.
Akasol is a Darmstadt, Germany-based subsidiary of Schulz Group. It buys battery cells from third-party suppliers, then tests and optimizes them in an integrated module. The company supplies mobile and stationary battery systems for automotive, commercial vehicle, off-highway, solar and wind power systems.
MTU, which produces large diesel engines, had been part of the Tognum joint venture between Rolls-Royce Group plc and Daimler AG. Rolls-Royce bought out Daimler last year and renamed the unit Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
