Nissan Motor Corp. is the latest carmaker to partner with Mobileye NV in tapping crowd-sourced data to make precision maps for self-driving vehicles.
Mobileye signed BMW and Volkswagen last February to pursue the same goal. The partners are using Mobileye’s Road Experience Management (REM) data management technology to automatically create high-definition maps, which are made accessible to robotic vehicles via the cloud.
Earlier this year Nissan completed proof-of-concept work on the REM system by demonstrating the technology in London. Mobileye notes that some of its technology also has been incorporated into Nissan’s ProPilot system, which can operate a vehicle’s steering, braking and acceleration automatically under certain conditions.
