Michigan Begins Site Work at Huge Mobility Test Facility
Construction of a $80 million mobility test facility in Michigan was officially kicked off this week outside the Detroit suburb of Ypsilanti.
Construction of a $80 million mobility test facility in Michigan was officially kicked off this week outside the Detroit suburb of Ypsilanti.
The complex, dubbed the American Center for Mobility, will occupy most of a 335-acre site that once housed a General Motors Co. factory. ACM aims to open a 2.5-mile-long highway test loop in December 2017.
Other features will include separate urban, off-road, commercial and residential sectors in which carmakers, suppliers, regulatory agencies and others can test driverless vehicle technologies, connectivity and other advanced mobility capabilities. The site also will offer an array of offices and garage spaces that users can lease.
ACM finalized a $1.2 million deal earlier this month to acquire 311 acres for its facility. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. is contributing $20 million to the overall project.
