Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz Truck unit will begin public testing of about 20 electric heavy-duty trucks this year in Germany.
The year-long pilot program will be used to fine-tune a production model that the company aims to launch by 2020. The test vehicles are based on last year’s Urban eTruck concept model, which has a 28,000-lb payload and is capable of driving as far as 120 miles before its battery pack must be recharged.
The test vehicles will be a mix of 18- and 25-tonne models in three configurations: flat bed, dry box and refrigerated. This will allow Mercedes to evaluate the truck’s performance under a variety of applications and conditions.
Based on a three-axle design, the Urban eTruck is powered by an electric rear axle and a 212-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The latter can be fully recharged in as little as two hours using a CCS Type 2 fast-charging connector.
