Mazda Motor Corp. says it will provide race-prepared versions of its new four-cylinder Skyactiv-D diesel engine for next year's Grand Am GX Class racing series.
Mazda Motor Corp. says it will provide race-prepared versions of its new four-cylinder Skyactiv-D diesel engine for next year's Grand Am GX Class racing series.
The GX Class will showcase cars powered by various "green" technologies.
The 2.2-liter Mazda race engines will use a stock block and a dual-stage turbocharger. The company has provided no other details about how the powerplants will differ from its production Skyactiv-D two-stage turbo diesel.
The standard diesel has a relatively low 14:1 compression ratio and 5200-rpm redline. The powerplant is about 20% more fuel efficient and 10% lighter than Mazda's previous 2.2-liter MZR-CD diesel.
The racing engines are being co-developed by Mazda Motor, its North America unit and Coral Spring, Fla.-based SpeedSource Inc. The partners expect to move from dynamometer evaluation to on-track testing late this year. Mazda says it won't reveal which vehicles will get the racing diesels until after this year's Grand-Am season ends.
