Mazda Motor Corp. will introduce the American market's first diesel-powered car from Asia a variant of the 2014 Mazd6 sedan during the second half of next year.
The 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D oil burner is 10% lighter and 20% more fuel efficient than the company's current diesel sold in other markets. Mazda has not yet released power and torque numbers for the new engine.
Mazda says the diesel's unusually low 14:1 compression ratio and two-stage turbocharger help boost fuel economy and enable the engine to meet soot and oxides of nitrogen emission limits without exhaust aftertreatments.
The company plans to introduce the next-generation Mazda6 with a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine in January. That powerplant, which boasts a high 13:1 compression ratio, will make an estimated 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque and be mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Both versions of the new sedan will be equipped with Mazda's new capacitor-based i-ELOOP regenerative braking system. The technology will deliver power to all the vehicle's electric devices. Mazda said earlier that the system could boost fuel economy as much as 10%.
