Mazda Motor Corp. says it is boosting capacity at the small-car assembly plant it is constructing in Mexico to 230,000 units from the originally planned 190,000 units.

The $500 million facility in Salamanca will open in 2014 and reach its new full capacity by March 2016, according to the company.

Mazda will use the plant primarily to make Mazda2 and Mazda3 small cars. The facility also has a contract to produce 50,000 Toyota variants of the Mazda2 per year for Toyota Motor Corp. All three models are intended for the North American market.
