The electric vehicle Mazda Motor Corp. plans to launch in 2020 will be an all-new, purpose-built model, company officials tell Autocar.

Mazda will offer the car in two versions: an all-electric model and one that teams an electric motor with a range-extending generator powered by a small rotary engine. Mazda is developing both iterations under an internal program that began before the company partnered with Toyota and Denso to collaborate on connected and electric-vehicle technologies.

Mazda also plans to launch a plug-in hybrid model in 2021. It isn’t clear if this vehicle will be based on the EV or part of the Toyota-Denso alliance.

The electrified models will be styled to resemble the rest of Mazda’s lineup rather than receive a unique “digital look,” design chief Ikuo Maeda tells the magazine.

Mazda aims to electrify all its vehicles by 2030. By that time, the company expects about 95% of its lineup will be hybrids or plug-in hybrids, with the remainder being pure EVs.
