Mazda Motor Corp. has indefinitely delayed plans to introduce its first diesel-powered model in the U.S.

The 2.2-liter Skyactiv turbodiesel was originally scheduled to debut in the Mazda6 midsize sedan last autumn. That date was pushed to April, but this week the company postponed the rollout again.

Mazda tells Automotive News the engine has cleared U.S. emissions tests without the need for costly aftertreatment equipment, as intended But the company says the resulting drivability characteristics don't meet its expectations.

Now Mazda engineers are considering giving the Skyactiv powerplant a reduction catalyst or urea injection system to reduce oxides of nitrogen emissions. The company tells AN it also continues to pursue ways to deliver the performance it wants without such equipment.
