London Vows to Phase Out Diesel Buses

London intends to stop buying diesel-powered double-decker buses in 2018 in an effort to improve air quality. Mayor Sadiq Kahn says the city will buy only zero-emission models thereafter.
Kahn’s office is working with other major cities to phase out diesel buses, Bloomberg News reports. The news service says Amsterdam, Cape Town and New York are among 11 cities that have pledged to stop buying diesel-powered buses by 2020. Paris, Madrid and Mexico City aim to do the same by 2025.
Diesel emissions, primarily nitrogen oxides, have been blamed for 9,400 early deaths per year in London. Kahn, who became the city’s mayor in May, has implemented road-specific bans on some buses, proposed a special charge on the city’s highest-polluting vehicles and says he wants to widen London’s so-called ultra-low-emission zone.
