LG Chem says it has been selected as the sole battery cell supplier for the next-generation electric versions of Daimler AG's Smart minicars due in 2016.
The South Korean company will provide cells to Daimler's Deutsche ACCUmotive batterymaking unit in Saxony, Germany. The subsidiary already makes propulsion batteries for the two-seat Smart ForTwo and hybrid powertrains in Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and S-Class sedans.
Last December Daimler announced it was investing €100 million ($109 million) to expand capacity at ACCUmotive to prepare for "high and steadily growing demand" in batteries for electrics and plug-ins.
