Kia Motors Corp. is in final talks to build its first assembly plant in Andhra Pradesh, India, The Economic Times reports.
A source tells the newspaper the 103 million-rupee ($1.6 billion) facility will be built in two steps, with first-phase capacity to make 300,000 vehicles per year. Hyundai Motor Co., Kia’s parent company, has been producing vehicles in India for two decades.
ET says Andhra Pradesh’s industries and commerce department has approved the acquisition of nearly 600 acres of land for the complex, which is near Bangalore and Hyundai’s factory. Sources say Kia may share Hyundai’s paint and body shops.
A vendor tells the newspaper that the facility’s first model is likely to be a variant of the Hyundai Creta small SUV/crossover.
